AREZZO

Arezzo is one of the wealthiest cities in Tuscany, due to its tradition in gold-smithery. Located in southeastern Tuscany, it sits atop a hill (where else?) at the crossroads of four valleys: the Val Tiberina, Casentino, Valdarno and Valdichiana.
Its ancient origins are verified by the stone tools and the so-called Man of the Elm discovered here and found to date back to the Paleolithic era. The Etruscan Aritim was founded around the 9th century B.C., and quickly became one of the most important cities in Tuscany, playing an important role over the centuries due to its strategic position along the Roman Via Cassia.
Even though the Medieval center was destroyed during World War II, Arezzo still has plenty of monuments, churches and museums remaining that offer visitors a chance to step back into history. The Church of San Francesco is probably the most famous in Arezzo, with the incredible Early Renaissance fresco cycle by Piero della Francesca depicting the Legend of the True Cross. You then head uphill to Piazza Grande, then on to the Medicean Fortress, visit the Cathedral dedicated to San Donato, then back down to the Roman Amphitheater and the Church of San Domenico with the wooden Crucifix by Cimabue. Take a look at our suggested itinerary for a day in Arezzo from top to bottom.

IL CASENTINO

The Casentino is the valley in which the first tract of the river Arno flows to Subbiano, Italy.
It is one of the four valleys in which the Province of Arezzo is divided. Mount Falterona, from which the Arno starts, represents the northern boundary between the Casentino and Romagna. On the east of the valley are the Alpe di Serra and the Alpe di Catenaia, which separate the Casentino from the highest tract of the Val Tiberina. On the west there is the Pratomagno, which separates the valley from the Valdarno Superiore. Part of the valley is included in the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona, Campigna National Park.
It can be said that the valley has an oval form, with an extension across the river that varies from a maximum of 60 km to a minimum of 30. The topography of the Casentino is especially various, including both plains and mountains rich in large forests. These mountains have often attracted great saints: it was here that St. Romuald built his hermitages at Camaldoli, and that less than two centuries later St. Francis of Assisi established the Sanctuary of La Verna, the headquarters of the Franciscan order.
The valley’s biggest comuni are all located in the Arno valley: among these the biggest are Bibbiena and Poppi, while Capolona, Castel Focognano, Castel San Niccolò, Pratovecchio, Stia, Subbiano are more or less smaller. The villages located on the neighbouring hills and mountains are much smaller. These are Chitignano, Chiusi della Verna, Montemignaio, Ortignano-Raggiolo and Talla.

LA VALTIBERINA

The medieval villages of the Tuscany Valtiberina (Upper Tiber Valley):
Anghiari (15 Km), town of the battle and University of autobiography, where is still strong the tradition of iron manufacture, of furniture restoration and weaving.
The historical centre with the Badia of XII sec., Palazzo Pretorio, Taglieschi museum, church of S. Maria delle Grazie is worth a visit.
Sansepolcro (20 Km), native land of Piero della Francesca, keeps in the municipal museum many works of the artist.
Monterchi (20 Km), with the famous “Madonna del parto” of Piero della Francesca and the museum of balances.
Caprese Michelangelo (18 Km), native land of Buonarroti. You can visit the native house and the fortress containing the Michelangiolesco Museum.

LA VALDICHIANA

This valley was an important location for the Etruscans, with Cortona, powerful jurisdiction in the VIII and VII century B.C. where remains of the ancient population can be discovered in the Etruscan Museum in Cortona. Also to be seen is the Tabula Cortonensis, a tablet of bronze found in 1992, broken into fragments which contains the longest Etruscan inscription, more than 40 lines. You can learn more about the Etruscan magic world with tombs in the Cortona Archeological Park and in Castiglion Fiorentino where recent excavations have brought to light interesting finds exhibited in the Archeological Museum.
The Etruscan age has left many signs and just as important are the forts of the medieval age which can be seen during your visit to Valdichiana. A good example is the one in Lucignano with its oval design, but also Monte San Savino and Civitella are full of charm. There are many artistic aspects to point out, with the magnificent Annunciazione by Beato Angelico in Cortona, the work by Luca Signorelli in his territory of birth and the Della Robbias with important glazed terracotta pieces kept in churches of Foiano della Chiana.
Wine, oil, chianina meat and fruit are of excellent quality, and used in the recipes prepared by restaurants together with homemade pasta in keeping with Tuscan tradition.

IL VALDARNO

San Giovanni town of Masaccio, Montevarchi and Figline, but also Castelfranco di Sopra, Loro Ciuffenna, Castiglion Fibocchi, and Laterina are nice towns characterized by their simplicity and beauty.
Behind them begins the Chianti area.
